I think the velvet suit has become the default for men looking to make more of a “choice” on red carpets. And by being the default step up from a basic tux for long enough, it has become boring!! Cant say its ever been my favorite but I’ll take it over NO texture at ALL. I feel more inclined to forgive it at the Tony’s. Feels like a bit of an ode to the big proscenium curtains of the silver stage in this particular context.
I live for a good color block but I simply do not understand the raving about the Katie Holmes look. Too shiny all around, ill-fitted, unflattering and excuse me as someone who devotedly assembled grammar school outfits based on the goal of looking like a human tube of Great Lash, the pink tone was way too light.
Cole Escola is my everything. I’m overjoyed that they created Oh, Mary! And that they won! And their gown- is so deliciously nonbinary with their chest rug paired with updo and cleavage bearing vintage glitter gown and look of sheer mania/ insanity. They’re a crazy sexy genius. Their Chastity on At Home With Amy Sedaris won my heart forever.
Katie Holmes' Prada look. The light pink beaded skirt was lovely, but I don't think it belonged with the dark green smock top. It looked like it was tucked in? and it was giving x-ray lead vest. I could see it working if they had made it even more voluminous or sleeveless, but ONLY if they made the color lighter. The dark green and light pink had way too much contrast, and combined with the contrast between the top and bottom, it was a floppppp. (also I wish they had left her hair down.)
Runner Ups:
I love Kristen Chenoweth but her all blue ensemble belonged on Dancing With The Stars. I think if the skirt extended all the way to the floor it would've looked less like a costume, but not by a lot. Cecily Strong's dress was giving 80's bed spread-- it was so bulky and boxy looking with such a strong print, and it totally swallowed her up.
agreed. for katie, i don't understand the decision to put the waistline there. and yes the top also looked tucked in but wasn't which made it all the worse. and i said this on the livestream, but kristin chenoweth's christian siriano dress felt like a bad dior pannier copy. and yeah cecily's was badgley mishka and it was too much print, too much fabric
Purpose on Broadway is absolutely revelatory, the Best Play bar none and my sweet, sweet friend Kara Young— no one deserves recognition more. She’s won TWO YEARS IN A ROW and this is her FOURTH CONSECUTIVE nomination. No one is doing theatre like her.
Audra gave what I believe was one of the greatest Tony performances in history (the only other comparable was Joaquina’s) & should have won (but we all know that).
Amber Iman gave us the best content sitting there behind Oprah. She needs to be put on the list to host.
Gavin Creel.
Cole Escola’s “4 more years” comment after Nicole’s win sent me to the moon.
Interesting the show known for celebrating immigrants as the backbone of America offered no acknowledgement to the brutal assault immigrants are facing in America today. hmm.
still, proud of my peers, congratulations to theatre makers- on Broadway and beyond.
I was disappointed in the color choice for Sarah snook - washed her right out. Admittedly I’m not fond of butter yellow in general even though I know it’s having a moment.
another classic example of why i think white women need to steer clear of flesh tones entirely, they almost always end up being too yellow or too pale etc. although i will say the dress photographed a lot better than it looked live

yeah i agree but also appreciated seeing so many men at an award show at least trying to make a choice with their fashion!
also loved cole's nod to bernadette, that's the kind of fashion i'm living for (wig was good too)
wig was great! nicole kidman take notes!

wow great lash is exactly what it is
Velvet suits are not to be worn in June. Put those aside until October, please. That is all.

cole is also my everything, i've been going to their live shows for like a decade now. i think about the goblin commuter of hoboken often https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=apyUcm9tO_I&ab_channel=ColeEscola

i found the fashion underwhelming. agree Katie Holmes look was horr if ic.
cynthia looked amazing, per usual. i loved her ruby red nods to oz.
i also really like nicole in the red, although simple.
tom francis, so good. lea michele (unfortunately) good. auli'i cravalo, stunning.
there was a lot of weird bows and pieces (see audra: the dress was so good minus that weird purple).
men were kinda boring, darren criss looked good though!
oh tom francis was really good! i was complimenting him on live but didn't know who he was. and i still wish nicole showed up drenched in blood!
Death becomes her is SO fun. The costumes are incredible and Michelle Williams EATS in her performance.
I LOVED Oh Mary. Difficult to sum up how funny and clever it is, you must go see it!
i've seen oh, mary twice! lol need to go see death becomes her next

Can we do a reader input recap for Met Gala too?
It was months ago but we could still use the forum. Ha!
sure! if people have pressing thoughts on it still, i'm happy to open up the chat
Love velvet and purple but let’s make it interesting folks!!!
What makes it better? Some acknowledgment of how it could so easily be kitsch or retro. What would it look like to make it fresh?
And Katie Holmes. I don’t mind it at all but think it could just be everyday wear like with sneakers. I actually think it’s cute.
